I found this on Japan Probe the other day and thought it was interesting enough to reblog. The clip from Fuji TV shows some people having difficulty on their bicycles after a recent snow storm. The report is mostly about a mother carrying a child with no seatbelt or helmet and crashing in front of a car because of the snow. I’ve always thought that carrying children in bicycle seats was dangerous, but for the most part it seems to work in Japan.

Seven-time Tour de France champion Lance Armstrong said he’s quitting professional cycling , ending a two-year comeback at age 39.
Cyclist Lance Armstrong prepares for the 51km Cancer Council Race - a part of the 2011 Tour Down Under, in Adelaide.
“My focus now is raising my five children, promoting the mission of Livestrong” and working with companies in the battle against cancer, Armstrong said.
Food and Drug Administration special agent Jeff Novitzky is holding a doping probe into the U.S. Postal Service team, with which Armstrong won most of his Tour titles. Armstrong has never failed a drug test and repeatedly denied using any banned performance-enhancing substances.
The rider dismissed allegations by Floyd Landis last year that doping was commonplace on the team, saying his fellow American wasn’t a credible witness. Landis was stripped of his 2006 Tour win for a failed drugs test.
Armstrong had planned to compete in the Tour of California and other U.S. races this year although he has been troubled by a knee injury since December, his RadioShack team spokesman Philippe Maertens said by telephone.

I was going strong. Getting in great shape. Avoiding injuries. Riding almost daily. 300km/week and sometimes more. And then I stopped. Completely. I just bought a new Trek Madone 5.1 and it is a sweet bike. But, I managed to injure a ligament in my left knee riding to Chichibu. So, I spent the last half of August, September, October, November, & December just vegetating. Almost no riding at all. Lost all my base.
Well, I am back riding again. Got out on the Madone a few times. It is a sweet bike. Having a few issues with the Ultrega pedals. They are quite stiff. Prior to this bike, I had only used Crank Bros Candy C and MTB shoes. I liked that combo because I could walk in them easily. And the Egg Beater type pedals have a goodly amount of play. Keeps my knees happy. Well, with the new bike, I need to get it dialed in perfect. Still working on that. But getting closer. And for 20km I seem to be ok if i don’t mash. But, over that and I’m pushing the knee again. Going to going on the cyclotrainer and see if I can’t get that sucker dialed in already. If now, I guess I will go back to the MTB shoes and the Candy’s.
Another good news. I finally go me a fixie!! Yeah! And is it ever fun. At first, I was totally afraid to get on it. So, what to do? My friend invited me to go down to the Keirin Track in Kawasaki last Sunday. Apparently Hiroshi san from C – Speed has the connections, so Tim, myself & James loaded up my Toyota Crown Wagon and headed down. And we had a grand old time. Remember, it was my first time riding on a fixie and on a Pro Track! A Double Virgin!! And sadly, I was the only one who could make it from Kokoloo.
Glad to say, all went well. I acquitted myself well. Did about 35km before calling it a day. Managed to ride all over the track – including the massively banked corners. Rode in several pace lines. Didn’t cause a pile up… I was stoked. So, Emi & I went across the street and had some hot, & garlicky ramen. Yum!
We returned about an hour later to find Tim and James engaging in a Time Trials. 2 1/2 laps almost all out. I think they both did decent times. Better than I could. I am going to try TT though, the next time we go. I think on the 27th. Will have some pictures soon, but here is a link to Roadfixi, where you can watch a video and read Tim’s take on the day. Tim & James were testing some carbon rims.
Here is a blogger I found who has some interesting times at the 250 meter track: Keirin Jo Tourist http://keirin-jotourist.blogspot.com/
In closing, I’d like to say that I am back again. And I will try to keep up this blog like I was before.

Cannondale is completely revamping their mountain bike lineup for 2011. This new lineup from Cannondale bikes is the first complete redesign since the Doral buyout, so all eyes are on Cannondale to see if they can keep the “boutique” feel going with big box backing. As part of the new mountain bike lineup announcement, the big C brought back the Jekyll.
